Mitigating risk with small, rural producers requires a unique mix of resources, knowledge and support across all five areas of risk management. The multi-tiered approach used in NE Michigan was built on carefully cultivated relationships and exceeded all expectations and projections because of the manner in which technical assistance was delivered to project participants. The planned project outcomes were achieved through customized educational programming and delivery, but subsequent and strategic decisions, coupled with deliberate actions, resulted in reduced financial, production, human and market risks for a subset of forward thinking growers.
