Building Capacity to Educate and Develop Awareness of Risk Management and Crop Insurance Among Hawaii’s Underserved Producers and the Challenges of COVID

Summary
In recent years, Hawaii producers have faced adverse weather conditions caused by hurricanes and storms, the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, and drought. Coffee growers experienced the introduction of the two worst pests of their crop. However, until disaster strikes, many farmers throughout Hawaii are unaware of their risks nor the availability of crop and disaster insurance. Most do not have adequate farm records, making them ineligible to apply for financial assistance. This project aims to help Hawaii’s underserved producers manage risk by building knowledge capacity among Extension Agents with “Train the Trainer” (T3) series. Since 2020 when this grant was funded COVID-19 has proven to have several challenges when creating educational programming.
Through the use of technology and software to augment traditional approaches, we were able to put on a series of webinars and a professional development workshop. Participants have shared what they have learned, what was helpful and what was a challenge when attempting to build their capacity.
