Climate and Farm Resiliency for the Next Generation

Summary
The “Climate and Farm Resiliency for the Next Generation” extension meeting series provides outreach to clientele focusing on the financial and legal issues for agricultural operations in Nebraska to sustain risk linked with farm or ranch transition and environmental resiliency. Funding in 2022 by the North Central Extension Risk Management Education Center allowed this program to be delivered across 14 meeting sites in Nebraska, with over 200 people in attendance representing diverse operations across the state.
The program curriculum focused on addressing risk management strategies including: identifying and developing plans to address agricultural financial issues; approaches for effective farm or ranch transition strategies addressing changing needs; and evaluating legal requirements for participating in ecoservice payments for improving stewardship and financial resiliency. Developing strategies to address financial challenges will address the skills required for growing a farm’s or ranch’s position during economic uncertainty and rising input expenses. Furthermore, addressing these issues on an operation also requires improvements in transition strategies to accommodate impeding forces better and improve the overall financial trajectory. Management skills taught as part of the curriculum help operations navigate the legal requirements of incentive payments to enable sustainable environmental stewardship.
To determine the effectiveness of this outreach program, an end-of-meeting evaluation (n = 159) was presented to those in attendance. From these evaluations: 94.7% of participants rated the quality of the presentation as good to very good, 62.3% of participants planned to evaluate the land succession plan to improve transition options, and 55.8% indicated the desire to reduce legal concerns to enhance profitability for their operation and land assets within the next six months to one year.
