Arkansas’ specialty crop production landscape has long been characterized by having a few relatively large commercial operators combined with numerous small farms that primarily focus on direct marketing channels. Sustained growth of “local food systems” has fueled interest in new business entry and expansion in the specialty crop production and value added processing areas. An identified primary concern is estimated profit potential and appropriate resources and production system needs for the numerous crops that are included within this sector. Growers seeking to enter, expand or diversify in specialty crop production need transparent resource to assist with management of their operations and communicating business performance and/or potential to industry stakeholders—financial institutions, government agency personnel, crop insurance agencies, etc.
