Experiences in Educating Producers on Proper Land Titling and Using a Business Organization

Summary

This presentation will share an educational program focused on conveying the benefits of properly titling owned farmland and the opportunities and challenges afforded by different types of business organizations. Participants included women through the Annie’s Project and farmland owners at estate planning and transition planning workshops series. The experiences of the presenters are important to groups working with beginning producers, traditionally underserved producers, and producers looking at transition or estate planning. Land titling changes can be used to allow for rights of survivorship for a surviving business partner or spouse but must be carefully considered. Similarly, a business organization structure can be utilize to limit liability and protect families by beginning producers and traditionally underserved producers. The same tools are also important for estate planning attorneys to efficiently pass on family farming operations to the next generation. Conference attendees will represent those women in agriculture groups, Annie’s Projects, Extension officials, and other officials working with these groups. This presentation will open a dialogue to allow for attendees to discuss methods that have been successful and those methods which have been unsuccessful in getting information on proper land titling and utilizing business organizations forms to the targeted audiences.
