How much computer training farmers and ranchers need to reduce farm management risk?

Summary
Computers, specifically spreadsheet use for farm management purpose is an essential tool in reducing administrative risks among other benefits. One of the objectives of the project Technology and Management Educational Center for Socially Disadvantage Farmers and Ranchers (SDFR) of Puerto Rico was to enhance and strengthen computer use and farm management among SDFR. Computer workshops were offered on an average of 15 contact hours with hands-on training to 83 farmers and ranchers in 2013. A research study was conducted to evaluate project deliverables using pre and post-test results. Results showed that before workshops, 47% of the participants had little or no knowledge of computer use and 73% in creating spreadsheets. After delivering educational workshops, there was an increase of 12% in number of participants that owned a computer, and an increase of 16.92% of participants using it for farm management purposes. Additionally, results showed that after an average of 5 hours of spreadsheet use participants indicated that they perceived an increase of 45.71% in knowledge. Results showed that there was statistical difference between knowledge before and after the educational workshops. This study supports evidence that 15 contact hours of computer workshops, for groups smaller than 25 will increase knowledge in computer use.
