Conference Name How much is that Bunch of Flowers?

Stephen Hadcock

Summary

In New York State, we have seen a significant increase in flower production, particularly among individuals who have started a farm business selling cut flowers. To help cut flowers better understand their production costs, a group of Cornell Cooperative Extension Educators worked together to develop a cut flower cost calculator.

The calculator is based on a vegetable cost calculator developed by Educators from UC Davis. A developer modified the calculator for cut flower production. During the presentation, Steve Hadcock will discuss the calculator's development, give a brief overview, and discuss teaching aids that have been developed to help cut flower growers feel confident in using it.

A cut flower grower who used the calculator determined that after 13 years of growing flowers, it was time to end the business. Based on the calculator, they learned that they were not profitable with their cut flower business.
