Agriculture continues to undergo major changes both operationally and structurally. Many producers may also perceive new opportunities for development of renewable energy sources (such as wind turbines) or oil and gas operations on their farmland. Simultaneously, restrictions on water use pose increasing challenges for producers as well. Dependent on the state in which their operation is located, producers be experiencing an increase in the number of laws and regulations, such as in the area of environmental and hiring foreign labor, impacting them over the past few years. Each of these changes present new opportunities and, accordingly, new legal risks into the operation. Agricultural producers must identify, understand and manage these legal risks so that their operations may become and/or remain profitable. This symposium highlights the research of two professionals in diverse parts of the country and provides a discussion forum for innovative approaches to legal risk management education across the United States.
