Suzy Hodgson

Summary

This presentation provides highlights of a University of Vermont Extension agroforestry workshop held in June 2024 as part of a NERME educational project on "Managing Climate Risks by Diversifying Practices". It will explain the collaborative process for developing the workshop with partners, choosing the site locations, and the importance of the "why" and "how" in explaining different approaches to farming to help both beginning farmers and small farmers interested in diversifying practices with agroforestry. The presenter will also talk about the evergreen value in creating a short video to raise wider awareness about agroforestry in the Northeast as this media is one of the best ways to show agroforestry's multi-dimensional, multi-strata, and wide-ranging benefits. The presentation will also explain how the learning experience of a three-hour workshop was condensed into a 6 minute video. Clips shown will include voices from attendees and collaborators and drone footage to reflect the essence of agroforestry and its future potential. The educational messages will also be put in the context of farming in the Northeast with its diversified operations, relatively small size in acreage and operations, variable soil conditions, and topography as well as the existing vegetative and tree cover.
