Managing Agricultural Land for the 21st Century

Summary

The “Managing Agricultural Land for the 21 Century” outreach series was developed based on interactions with extension clientele needing to address the risk management issues associated with agricultural land and improvements on farm and ranch operations. During 2017 this outreach meeting series were piloted as a fee-based workshop in four separate locations across Nebraska with a total of 107 participants

The purpose of this program addressed the risk management issues associated with agricultural land and improvements on farm and ranch operations. Specifically, learning outcomes achieved from this project addressed land resource management issues including: equitable rental rates and lease provisions; effective communication for landlords, tenants, and family members; strategies for successful farmland succession and transfer; and critical agronomic skills to improve the conservation and productivity of owned or leased farm and ranch land. The target audience for this project includes beginning producers, small farms or ranches, women producers, and allied business stakeholders across Nebraska.

The pilot outreach meeting series focused on risk management including setting equitable rental rates and lease provisions, effective communication strategies, transition considerations, and agronomic approaches for improved management. A survey was presented to workshop participants (N=107), from those 43 (40.1 percent), 93.1 percent stated they learned "some" to "very much" about setting equitable rental rates, 86.2 percent of respondents indicated they would use improved communication skills in the next 6-12 months, 73.5 percent indicated they would re-evaluate transition plans, and 82.9 percent planned to implement better agronomic skills in managing their land.
