Latino immigrant farmworkers represent an incredible store of agricultural knowledge and experience; and many have the desire and motivation to farm independently at a time in U.S. history when farmers are scarce. Investment in their potential through access to education and resources can contribute to a revival of the family farm and rural economy.
Helping farmworkers make the bold leap to farm ownership is challenging, as most of them lack capital, English-language skills, and knowledge of markets, regulations and business management.
To overcome these barriers, ALBA provides beginning, mostly Mexican immigrant, farmers subsidized access to resources and hands-on technical assistance over 5 years giving them the time and space to master production, financial, marketing and legal risk.
The presentation will summarize our program, addressing how we have bolstered our risk management education and assistance in tandem with private and non-profit partners through past WERME projects.
