Typically, estate and succession planning education is difficult to attract audiences to, especially younger farmers. The topic of estate planning can be uncomfortable for people in general because it involves discussing one's own death or the death of a loved one. Furthermore, estate planning is often complicated by contentious family relationships. To address these concerns, the University of Maryland Extension's Farm Stress Management team took on a novel approach to providing risk management education.
The novel approach included blending couples' relationship education with estate and financial planning. We marketed the event as a quick getaway for couples that could be both entertaining and informative. A central location in the state was selected that also had tourist appeal, and we contracted with an appealing hotel to host the event.
As of the writing of this proposal, the event has not taken place yet. However, confirmed attendance (i.e., fully paid registrants) have already exceeded the majority of our other estate planning events (6 couples or 12 individuals registered as of 1/13, compared to an average of 5 registrants per class during 2022). This method has appeared to increase the appeal of estate and succession planning. We hope to provide evaluation feedback by the time of the conference, since a month will have passed from the time of the actual event.
