Reducing Financial, Human and Production Risks Through Tractor and Mechanization Education to Beginning Farmers

Summary

In 2014 and 2015, the Ground Work project delivered tractor safety, use, maintenance and farm mechanization education to 110 beginning farmers (<10 years in commercial operation), farm workers and farm apprentices from VT, NH, MA, NY, CT, ME and RI. Participants gained tractor safety, use and maintenance skills, and knowledge necessary to make production and financial decisions regarding farm mechanization. As a result, participants reported improving safety practices on their farms and being better able to manage human, financial and production risks in a variety of beginning farm operations. The project used a combination of online (webinar) and small-group, hands-on sessions for education. Web-based supplementary resources and individual consultations via email and phone further supported farmer learning and implementation of change. At the project´s conclusion, 44 participants reported that the project helped them improve tractor safety, operation and maintenance and/or make mechanization decisions for their farms. This presentation will provide a brief over view of project activities, results and benefits and challenges of providing this “mixed-methods” approach to farmer risk management education.
