Risk Also Apply to Project Management: Challenges and Managing Pitfalls after and Atmospheric Event

Summary
Risk Management Educators have the task to teach farmers and ranchers about how to manage farm risks. There are always limitations and pitfalls associated with a proposed a project’s methodology. But what if there is as an atmospheric event that affect all of your project activities? Are we also dealing with risks? As a PD or Co-PD we need to manage also risks associated to atmospheric events. But how can we manage these project’s risks after a catastrophic event. How soon can I start outreach and educational activities? How can we communicate with project participants when communications are not existent? If our audience suffer losses due to atmospheric conditions, how can we use project funds to assist farmers and ranchers that have lost all their production by reaching project objectives? Are our recommendations to manage production risks the best decision for a farmer and rancher after losing everything? What can we recommend to the project participants? This presentation will include answers to some of this questions and will include some experiences with the management of a funded project after a catastrophic atmospheric event such as Hurricane María in Puerto Rico. In addition, we will like to present or start a discussion to revisit general recommendations to manage production risks such as buying an insurance, are these really the best decision a farmer and rancher can make?
