As farmer-trainers, we love to tout the importance of understanding the consumer in order to market farm products effectively. However, we don’t always practice what we preach in the tools and resources we create for the very audience in which we serve. In this session, hear how two programs at Cornell University and NC State’s NC Choices have collaborated to develop simple, inexpensive, and effective tools that help livestock farms price, process, sell, and market meat in direct-to-consumer channels. We’ll showcase and demonstrate the tools, share farmer stories and the cumulative impacts made from these tools, and explain how the secret to their success does not depend on expensive solutions but lies in responding to the specific needs of our target audience.
