When designing any educational activity, one must consider educational objectives. Nicole Tommell and Steve Hadcock have been facilitating an online QuickBooks course for farmers through the Cornell Small Farms Program for several years. The course has both primary and secondary educational objectives. The primary objective is for students to demonstrate their knowledge of using QuickBooks, confidently developing a chart of accounts, tracking income and expenses, and using reports to provide essential business information. The secondary objective is to instruct students on how to complete various tasks using QuickBooks, such as creating an income account.
To achieve these educational objectives using the flipped classroom model, Nicole and Steve conduct a six-week online course, covering a different topic each week. To fulfill the second learning objective, they have created a series of screencasts demonstrating how to complete QuickBooks tasks based on the week's topic.
Each week includes a webinar where students gather to meet with Nicole and Steve. Here, the flipped education model is employed: students are expected to have watched the screencasts before the webinar. During the webinar, Nicole and Steve do not demonstrate various tasks in QuickBooks; instead, they cover concepts related to the week's topic, helping students feel confident about setting up QuickBooks for their business.
