Programming in the Sun: Extension Programming for Alternative Energy LEases

Summary

In the past few years, Maryland, like many states, has been hit with an increase in potential opportunities for alternative energy development for landowners. Alternative energy companies’ present landowners with long-term leases to utilize the property for solar or wind development. These leases can be complex, last for twenty or more years, and may have complex royalty clauses that the average landowner may not understand.
To aid landowners in this decision-making process, extension faculty at the University of Maryland developed outreach materials to quickly get information out and educate landowners. This proposed session would highlight how the University of Maryland Extension quickly developed workshops and outreach materials to meet a developing need. Workshops covered the economic issues associated with these alternative energy leases and the legal issues associated with the leases. Outreach materials included those developed due to specific Maryland state laws and a collection of resources developed by other Extension programs around the country. Workshop attendees evaluated the program and provided feedback on additional resources that could be developed to be useful.
